Equity in Our PRactice & Culture

On June 10, 2021, DPS Board of Education voted to adopt the Racial and Educational Equity Policy. As a member of the Equity Policy Task Force, Bettina collaborated with others to bring this idea into fruition. Now, we must focus on how our policy becomes practice and our culture..

  • Embed Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices into educator observation and evaluation tools

  • Embed Equity Goals into School Improvement Plans

  • Continue to support the recruitment and retention of educators of color

  • Provide additional pay for bilingual teachers who support translation/interpretation at their schools

  • Expand MWBE participation in capital improvement projects

Investing in Our students & educators

Our students deserve the best educational opportunities that will prepare them for college or career after high school graduation. Our students deserve continued investment in student academic achievement, social-emotional learning and connections to career and extra-curricular activities.

  • Increase student achievement through acceleration and not remediation

  • Advocate for additional school counselors to move closer to the 250 student to 1 counselor ratio recommended by the American School Counselor Association

  • Invest in programming that support boys of color, especially Black boys

  • Increase access to mental health supports

  • Ensure policies and practices support student identities

  • Enrich curriculum with culturally responsive text

  • Create targeted academic & social-emotional interventions for students of concern

We have phenomenal educators in Durham Public Schools and as a Board, we must implement policies to recruit and retain our amazing educators.

  • Increase teacher supplement to the highest in the state

  • Create a competitive salary schedule for our classified employees

  • Provide meaningful professional learning and growth opportunities

  • Support grow our own programs for all roles within the districts including teachers and principals

  • Deepen partnerships with programs like UNC DREAM and NCCU School of Education to recruit & retain educators of color
